Passing of OLAF Director General

OLAF DirectorMuch to our regret we must inform you of the death of Franz-Hermann Brüner, Director General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) since 2000, who passed away on 9 January 2010 after a long illness.

With warm gratitude we still vividly remember our countless personal meetings and discussions on various occasions, especially in the framework of our close cooperation, from the very beginning, within the European Partners Against Corruption network as well as the EU contact-point network against corruption (EACN).

We praise Mr Brüner's relentless dedication and energetic contribution to the fight against fraud and corruption and to the creation of a strong awareness of the importance of this fight not only within the borders of Europe but also way beyond. The likes of Franz-Hermann Brüner are few and far between. With him we have lost a most outstanding and inspiring personality, whose reputation and high commitment in the field of anti-corruption has always been gratefully received and highly acknowledged globally.

Above all, Mr Brüner was an encouraging and inspirational companion and friend. May he rest in the peace that he so well deserves. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the family of Franz-Hermann Brüner.
