International Anti-Corruption Day 2009

ANti-Corruption Day"Economic development by countering private sector corruption" - On the occasion of the World Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December, a public hearing on addressing the challenges of corruption on the private sector will takes place at the European Parliament.

On the same day in 2003, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), which is the first legally binding anti-corruption instrument with a global scope. Experts from Transparency International, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, European Anti-Fraud Office and European Commission will take part.

Companies in the private sector are increasingly developing internal policies against corruption. In spite of this, the massive scale of global corruption obstructs the path towards sustainable economic growth. The hearing will examine to what extent EU Member States have implemented and enforced existing EU foreign bribery laws and other related international conventions and how EU-based companies comply with anti-corruption regulations.
